ARTHRITIS IN THE NECK

There are over 50 million individuals in the United States alone that suffer with the pain and immobility that arthritis causes. These individuals experience stiffness, soreness or tenderness, decreased range of motion, and overall lack of mobility. Arthritis in the neck can cause all of those same symptoms and can also have an effect on the spinal cord as well, which often decreases mobility much more than if it were not affected by this disease. Arthritis in the neck is common; an estimated 26 million individuals suffer from this type of arthritis alone and many more will join them. This type of arthritis can cause spurs to grow on the bone which is a condition that is commonly called a cervical spondylosis. It is a very uncomfortable condition, as these small points of bone tend to press into the body tissues often and cause severe pain to the individual.

Causes of arthritis in the neck can be several but there are a few that are listed that are, of course, the most common. These causes are: employment in a field such as heavy construction, football players, boxers, gymnasts, and even surfers. These positions require individuals to take the risk of receiving a blow to the head, which can often result in an arthritic development later. Other causes can be unexpected such as a car accident, an unexpected fall or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately, these occurrences can predispose an individual to arthritis of the neck. There is also believed to be familial history involved that can predispose this type of arthritis as well. Those individuals with a predisposition should be very careful in their decisions throughout life to ensure the least development of this debilitating disease.

Treatment can be sought out with the help of a good physician and often includes medications, neck brace requirements, possible surgery, and physical therapy.
